The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) is a specialized medical logistics provider for Ministries of Medical Services/Public Health-supported health facilities and programmes. The Agency was formed on 11th February 2000 as a result of recommendations of a health stakeholders’ forum dubbed “Strategies for Reforming the Drug and Medical Supplies Systems in Kenya” held between June 7 and 10, 1998.

KEMSA SCOOPS THE STATE CORPORATION OF THE YEAR AWARD

Kemsa Institutional Excellence Award

During the inaugural National Health Sector excellence awards held in December 2011, Kenya Medical Supplies Agency-KEMSA won the USAID sponsored State Corporation of Year Award for institutional excellence in the Health sector.
 
The two health ministries of Medical Services and Public Health & Sanitation held the inaugural National Sector Conference in December 2011 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. The overall goal of the conference was to create visibility for the various health sector initiatives and sensitize stakeholders on the critical areas to be addressed in the context of devolved management of health services under the new constitution.

 

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

  • KEMSA’s government performance contract rating in 2007 was “Poor.” In 2009 it was “Good.” In 2010 it was “Very Good.”
  • Reduced customer order turnaround time by 67% in 2 years from 45 days in 2009 to 15 days in 2011.
  • KEMSA increased throughput by 1000% from 2005 (Kshs. 2 Billion) to 2011 (Kshs. 22 Billion). 
  • Increased customer satisfaction by 7% in 3 years from 67% in 2008 to 74% in 2011.
  • Improved the national customer order fill rate by 35% in 4 years, from 40% in 2007 to 75% in 2011.
  • Increased storage capacity by 32% via a new racking system in the Embakasi central warehouse.
  • Reduced quantity of expired medical commodities from 8% in 2008 to 4 % in 2011.
