The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) is a specialized medical logistics provider for Ministries of Medical Services/Public Health-supported health facilities and programmes. The Authority was formed on 11th February 2000 as a result of recommendations of a health stakeholders’ forum dubbed “Strategies for Reforming the Drug and Medical Supplies Systems in Kenya” held between June 7 and 10, 1998. A State Corporation established by a legal notice issued under CAP 466 of the Laws of Kenya, KEMSA replaced successive medical stores administrations that had existed since 1901 under various names. KEMSA works to support the National Health Strategic Plan and the Kenya Health Package for Health in providing public health facilities with the “right quantity and quality of drugs and medical supplies” at the best market value”.

KEMSA new Vision and Mission Statements:

The strategic direction, guided by a newly crystallised mission and vision, articulates where the Authority wants to be at the end of the five years starting this year. KEMSA reviewed its current vision and mission statements and in articulating the future strategic direction, redefined its new vision as:

Become a medical logistics service organisation of choice

And its mission as:

KEMSA will provide reliable, effective and sustainable medical logistics service for health care delivery

Strategic Objectives and Key Performance Indicators

To support the achievement of the vision and mission defined for the next five years, the corporate strategic objectives have been defined. These are based on four key strategic pillars of:

  • Governance, financial management and capitalisation: The focus of this strategic pillar will be the governance structures of the organisation, the financial management and capitalisation of KEMSA.
  • Customer development and satisfaction: This strategic pillar / perspective put the customer at the core of KEMSA’s strategic direction. Objectives formulated around this pillar are focused on increasing the number of customers and retaining valuable customers and all aspects of ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Supply chain excellence: This focuses on ensuring that the operational processes supporting all aspects of the supply chain are efficient and effective.
  • Capacity building: This pillar focuses on ensuring that the resources and capacity required to support achievement of the strategic direction are available in the organisation and that resources are utilised optimally.
